Here’s what I wish someone had told me when I started this journey:
I spent way too much time obsessing over finding the perfect solution. You know what I eventually realized? The best solution is the one that your people will actually use. If a simpler display gets used daily, it’s infinitely better than a sophisticated one that sits gathering dust.
What looks like a great deal today might not look so great when you factor in total cost of ownership. Consider:
- Software license costs over time
- Expected lifespan of the hardware
- Availability of spare parts and repairs
- Whether the technology will still be supported in five years
Once you’ve done the research, talked to references, and seen the demos in action – listen to your instincts. Which one just feels right? Because at the end of the day, you’re the one who’ll be using this thing day in and day out.
Here’s what I’ve learned after months of research, demo sessions, and soul-searching:
Both Interactive Whiteboards and Smart Boards are trying to solve the same problem – how to make learning and collaboration more engaging and effective. They just approach it differently.
The Interactive Whiteboard says: “Here’s the tool, make it work for however you need it to.”
The Smart Board says: “We’ve thought of everything, here’s the complete package.”
Neither approach is inherently wrong. The right choice depends entirely on your unique situation – your budget, your team, your needs, and your comfort level with technology.
I chose an
Interactive Flat Panel-IFP for our school because it offered the perfect balance of features, price, and flexibility for our specific situation. But that doesn’t mean it’s the right choice for you.
